More Alligator Facts From Our Alligator Tour In New Orleans

November 11, 2019

If you’ve never been to the Gulf area, you’ve probably never seen an alligator. But anyone down here will tell you—the swamp is the best place to see them! Before you take a bayou adventure, find out more about these modern dinosaurs with Adventures of Jean Lafitte. You might even surprise your friends and family with what you know.

Are There Different Kinds Of Alligators?

Everyone knows the American alligator! It’s famously found along the Gulf Coast and a fan favorite of those perusing the swamp. But there is, in fact, another type of gator out there—the Chinese alligator.

Chinese gators are much smaller than their American counterparts. American gators can grow up to 15 feet, but Chinese gators cap out at about six or seven. If these two are ever in the room together and can’t be differentiated by size, another good way to tell is by looking at the snout. Chinese gators have a smaller and more upturned snout, making them tend to look like caimans.

Unfortunately, both of these big reptiles have had their issues with their population. Currently, the Chinese gator populace is around 100 in the wild. On the other hand, there is some good news. Many zoos and conservation teams have been having a good time repopulating their numbers. And on the American side, they have moved into the ‘least concern’ category, now with numbers well into 2 million!

While there are only two types of gators out there, there are many creatures that tend to be confused for these beasts. Caimans, crocodiles…even smaller creatures such as lizards from time to time!

Are Alligators Like Frogs?

We get this question more often than you’d think! But it has a rather long-winded answer. Because yes, they are alike, but then, no—they’re very different.

The main difference is that gators are giant reptiles and frogs are amphibians. Amphibians spend a good amount of time in the water and need to be wet in order to be healthy. While alligators spend a good amount of time in the water, they aren’t amphibians. We can usually tell if a creature is amphibious or not by their skin. If a critter has scales—you know this is a reptile. On the other hand, amphibians have smooth skin they breathe and drink through. Additional differences can go on and on, depending on the specific species.

But like we said, they’re also very similar. Many amphibians lay eggs just as lizards do, but their eggs are often in the water and are soft to the touch. And while amphibians have webbed feet, most reptiles have clawed toes. However, some reptiles like the gator also have webbed toes for swimming! On top of everything, both amphibians and reptiles are cold-blooded creatures. But while reptiles bask in the heat, amphibians don’t want to risk drying out their skin. They instead look for a sweet spot of just right humidity. Overall, these two types of creatures can be very similar. So similar, in fact, that amphibians were once considered reptiles for a time.

So, yes, gators are like frogs, but they’re full of differences too!

Historically Famous Adventure Tours Of This New Orleans Bayou

September 24, 2019

New Orleans is a famous city for many historical reasons. One of our most interesting stories hails from a pirate in the 1800s, Jean Lafitte. Maybe you’ve heard of him before, but have you ever wondered why our swamp tours are called the Adventures of Jean Lafitte? Well when you aboard our adventure tours in the New Orleans bayou, you journey through the same waterways where the famous pirate made his name! Only at the Adventures of Jean Lafitte, can you experience a swamp tour with this much history.

A Journey Through Time

Let’s go back in time! From 1810 to 1814, Jean Lafitte, a French-American pirate, and his men occupied the swampy port off the coast of New Orleans called Barataria Bay

During Lafitte’s occupation, the United States was fighting Great Britain in the War of 1812 and the Bay was a key approach the British Navy needed to advance. However, Lafitte was a supporter of the United States Army, so when the British Navy tried to broker a deal with him, he instead warned the New Orleans officials about the upcoming attack. Unfortunately, the New Orleans governor refused to believe Lafitte and took the opportunity to wipe out most of his colony. However, not all the ships were captured, and neither was Lafitte’s spirit!

Since his men were skilled in naval combat, he struck up a deal with General Andrew Jackson. In exchange for their pardon, the Lafitte colony, or “Baratarians”, joined the Americans in the Battle of New Orleans and brilliantly battled the British Navy. The United States won the battle and simultaneously, won the war. It’s even said that General Jackson himself recognized Lafitte as “one of the ablest men” of the battle.

Fun For The Whole Family

Following the war, the Baratarians moved to Galveston, Texas and continued their piracy—although their contribution to our city, state, and country’s history is not forgotten. With so much compelling Louisiana history, the Adventures of Jean Lafitte is an exciting opportunity to combine fun and learning on family vacations. Take the opportunity to teach the little ones about how our unique swamp culture shaped not only our city’s history but our country’s!

So, what even is a pontoon boat? By definition, a pontoon boat “is a flattish boat that uses multiple pontoons to float.” Helpful, right? So let’s break it down. These pontoons are tubes that contain a lot of reserve buoyancy. With these pontoons being underneath the boat,  a large deck area is a pretty standard occurrence. Pontoons take on various shapes and sizes but ultimately they support a large amount of weight while remaining very sturdy and quick. In the boating world, pontoon popularity is at an all-time high!

Fun Gator Facts

The weather is warming up. As a result, the alligators are more active now. Our resident reptiles love the sun and can’t get enough of it. This is because reptiles are cold-blooded, they have no internal way to heat themselves up as we do.

So to begin, we’d like to make the point that alligators are not the same as crocodiles. While they both look similar, there are a few key differences. For example, alligators tend to have darker bodies and rounded snouts. However, we have to say the key difference is their mouths. When an alligator closes its mouth, all of its upper teeth are visible.

The longest documented alligator was discovered in 1890 in Louisiana. This huge reptile measured at 19.2 feet and weighed nearly 2,000 pounds! However, most gators tend to top out around 13 feet and can be about 800 pounds on average.

To find out more about these creatures, you’ll have to join us on a New Orleans alligator tour!

What Can You Hope To See In The Bayou?

Bayou Barataria offers much more than just gators in her waters! Look out for these creatures of the swamp:

Just like the gators, the other animals adore getting out for some Louisiana sunlight. On the other hand, if you happen to be more interested in our flora, make sure to look out for:

  • Cypress Trees
  • Spanish Moss
  • Louisiana Irises
  • Swamp Rosemallow
  • Cattails
  • And much more!

Very few of these can be found outside the state, so be sure to snap a few photos when you get the chance. We can’t wait to see what you capture. If you upload any to Instagram make sure to tag us—@advofjeanlafitte!
